Why did you decide to start-up a business in Ambridge?

I started this business when I was 19 years old. I started cutting hair in my parent’s house and after getting married, my husband and I bought this building to continue on with the business. I am proud to say that we have been on Merchant Street for 35 years. Because we lived upstairs (my husband built us an apartment) there wasn’t a need to drive anywhere because anything that we could have needed was right here on Merchant Street. In addition to this business, we have been able to open a few others around town and actually rebranded Una Bella about four years ago.

What was your experience like in obtaining financing?

All of this business was privately financed. Though I did take advantage of the façade grant program offered through the county because it is an unbelievable deal. It is such a great program that we have actually applied for the grant to redo multiple commercial properties that we own in Ambridge. The results are worth it.

What advice would you have for a beginning business owner?

There are two components that are vital in business: consistency and accountability. Quality customer service must be first and foremost and it is crucial to always exceed your customer’s expectations. It is so important to stay relevant and identify your community’s needs and in turn, evolve to those needs.

What was your biggest surprise in starting your business?

Honestly, we have not encountered too many surprises over the years. We did find old euchre cards from 1911 when we first bought this building which was definitely a cool surprise for us. In general, the bad rapp that Ambridge gets is not fair. The perception of our town needs to change.

How have you been impacted by the community of Ambridge after opening this business?

Everything has been positive. Ambridge offered me, as a business owner, low overhead with a much higher profit margin than I could have achieved anywhere else. I’ve been able to make a good living on what I love. My husband and I have been very invested in this community and have loved every bit of it. We need players that will work together, and we are getting that. Progress is happening here.
